A-Z Info

Taken after an interview with Local 2 Houston
Hello and thank you for stopping by the new A-Z Tropicals Blog.

A-Z Tropicals is a budding (pun definately intended) Houston based tropical plant grower / nursery. At the moment we are a small backyard growing operation specializing in rare tropical foliage and flowering plants. We plan to open a large five acre Retail Nursery and Gardening Center in North Houston in the next 2 years. In the mean time we will be keeping the gulf coast up to date with the latest and greatest in horticulture news for our area, from tips and tricks to new drought tolerant plants. We will also be selling our rare plants over the internet at our site: a-ztropicals.com and at local farmers markets, festivals, etc.

About Us
I am a Master Gardener and a graduate of SHSU with a degree in Horticulture, and I am the head grower for A-Z Tropicals. My fiance, Amanda Cunningham (Co-owner / Manager of A-Z Tropicals), is a fellow Bearkat with a Masters in Education and Instructional Leadership, and she is employed as a teacher by day.

Over the past seven years as a horticulturist I have studied tropical plants in the jungles of Costa Rica, grown bromeliads in Hawaii, brokered plants for a wholesale nursery in Houston, and I am currently employed as the Head Horticulturist for the Cockrell Butterfly Center at The Houston Museum Of Natural Science. While working for the museum I have written numerous blogs educating the public on some of my favorite tropical plants including Houston's infamous Corpse Flower Lois and baby sister Audrey.  The 2010 blooming of Lois also spawned my nickname "Houston's Horticulture Hunk" given to me by the Houston Chronicle, and earned me my 15 minutes as the face of Corpse Flower education while I explained the unique blooming cycle of the rare Amorphophallus titanum to over 20 news organizations all over the world including the BBC, NPR, Tokyo Broadcasting, Rueters, AP, Voice of America, and every local newspaper, TV, and radio station.

We at A-Z Tropicals hope that we can share our knowledge and our passion for horticultural excellence with you through educational blogs, seminars, and demonstration gardens!

Happy Planting!
